The European Commission has formally charged Google with using its Android mobile operating system to “preserve and strengthen its dominance in internet search”. Though notionally open-source, Android comes with conditions that, for example, require handset-makers to install Google as the default search engine. If the commission prevails, Google could face a fine of up to $7.4 billion.
