Creative Entrepreneurs in Asia
One of the first seminars on day one of Spikes 2014 took a look at creativity through the lens of Entrepreneurs in Asia. With all the talk of tech startups and incubators in the region, it was good to get a reminder that some players in the more traditional creative industries (advertising included) are also developing innovative business models. Julian Boulding, Founder of thenetworkone, singled out the data vs creativity debate as one of the main drivers of innovation, while Andrew Lok, Creative Director turned agency founder, revealed his startup agency (CIVILISATION) secrets – in particular his ‘lean methodology’ of starting with no clients, and no overheads.
The session concluded with Darryl Arnold, CEO, Newton Circus, who showed that the entrepreneurial traffic is not all one way: his story traced an arc from success in the advertising world to his current work in the world of actual technology startups, hackathons and data-driven urban design. Arnold implored the audience to think beyond traditional measures of success (billings, revenue, headcount), and start to imagine, as he did, what their legacy for the future might be.
