After dressing presidents, royals and celebrities for decades, the Queen of 7th Avenue, Donna Karan recently announced her decision to give up the ship on Donna Karan International and DKNY, and focus on her artisanal initiative Urban Zen.
Donna Karan has been a believer in giving back to the society and to that end, she birthed Urban Zen, a place for cultural preservation and supporting the nonprofit Urban Zen Foundation. She describes it as a luxury marketplace where east meets west and bridges the gap between philanthropy and commerce. Karan further expanded the brand to include eCommerce as she’s very comfortable with the direct to consumer model.
“It’s back to fashionable basics,” she says. Think $1300 sweaters and $800 skirts and pants. The company has no outside investors, has just three stores (in Manhattan, Sag Harbor, and Aspen), and a small team of 25 employees.
