Vice Chairman of CEA, Robert Heiblim discussed digital transition of cars, the Internet of Things and alternative fuel usage. He shares how back in the day, all people spoke about was a car’s horsepower and now the conversation is about the software integration. He candidly states that this is an easier and more cost-effective need for car manufacturers to address than fuel efficiencies.
He raises the issue of ownership of data from connected cars and the greater benefit to manufacturers — contrary to the customer centric marketing. Heiblim believes that the automotive industry is more disciplined because of the time it takes to adopt newer technologies and equip customers with the new experience. The electronics industry however, is pretty cut-throat with CES showcasing augmented products and services every year.
